Apple has unveiled HomeView, its first smart home device to feature a dedicated Liquid Retina display. Set to launch later this month in India and other global markets, HomeView will be available in four color options. Designed for use by multiple household members, the device includes support for facial recognition. The Cupertino-based tech giant is already developing new features for the device; reports indicate that an upcoming update will enable HomeView to function as a home security camera. Furthermore, in addition to its existing Siri-based AI capabilities, the device may also receive new, dedicated AI applications.
Anticipated New Features for HomeView
On the platform X, a user named pdfu (@itspdfu) revealed that Apple’s HomeView is set to integrate into the HomeKit ecosystem, allowing it to serve as a home security camera. The user discovered this functionality within the HomeView 27.2 software update, which reportedly includes enhancements to both “functionality and privacy protection.” HomeView is expected to work with HomeKit Secure Video, offering features such as activity detection, live video streaming, and recording.
According to reports, code strings indicate that surveillance footage and video from HomeView will be accessible only to the six registered household members. Additionally, the device is designed to display a green light on its screen and emit an audible alert whenever a user accesses the camera feed or when the device begins recording.
This appears similar to the camera and microphone indicators found on iPhone and iPad models, which are represented by green and yellow lights, respectively. Furthermore, the user noted that HomeView sends alerts to other users whenever HomeKit Secure Video settings are modified. It is understood that users can manage HomeView’s behavior—for instance, by disabling recording or adjusting settings for motion detection and video streaming.
An update to Apple’s HomeView software (version 27.2) may also allow users to specify when their smart home devices should detect motion, stream video, or record footage. Potential options could include “At Home,” “Away,” and “Asleep.”
In another post, the user revealed that Apple also plans to introduce dedicated AI applications for HomeView, including Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This would be a significant update, as HomeView lacks its own App Store; consequently—much like the first-generation iPhone—users will not be able to download new apps. Initially, it will come pre-installed solely with Apple’s own AI chatbot, Siri.
